Traditional ways to obtain Capsaicin

1. Chili powder

Chili powder is obtained by milling chili into a fine powder. This can then be added to the desired formulation.

The capsaicin content of chili varies depending of type of chili employed

  • 0.6- 1.5% in very highly pungent chili

  • 0.2-0.3% in highly pungent chili

  • 0.04-0.14% in moderately pungent chili

2. Capsaicin extraction

The most common way to obtain capsaicin is by taking chili powder and extracting the capsaicin using ethanol.

Yields vary depending on choice of chili.

  • Purity varies: Most commercial sources claim purity of 55%

  • Through this method it is difficult to separate and purify the capsaicin.

Positive Health Effects of Capsaicin

Recent studies shows that as little as 10 ppm in chicken feed can be enough to keep chickens healthy and increase their growth by 5-10%.

 A bonus of using capsaicin-treated feed on poultry farms is that it may substantially reduce feed contamination by rodents and ultimately the incidence of Salmonella infection in poultry.

The conclusion of studies is that the inclusion of capsaicin in the feed improved body weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion ratio.

At the same time capsaicin decreased the total blood cholesterol concentration. From such data, it appears that red chili pepper as a feed supplement in certain quantities enhances the overall performance of broiler chicks.

 One study showed that capsaicin when added as growth promoter in the broiler diets has a similar effect as that with antibiotic without any adverse effects.

From the obtained data and field results it can be concluded that capsaicin can be successfully used in poultry nutrition for improvement of productive performance and a reduction of cholesterol levels in blood.

Proteins are important additives in animal feed. Animal proteins are however expensive.
A common alternative is to use leguminous plant (as protein carriers).


  • Animals such as pigs cannot break down oligosackarides. This results in bacteria growth which has a negative effect on the health of the pigs.

  • By adding capsaicin to the animal feed two effects can be observed:

    1) A better intestine environment: more healthy animals and less bacteria growth.

    2) 1.Less antibiotics are needed to keep the animals healthy.
